The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation, in a joint procurement with the City’s Department of Transportation Services (DTS), has awarded to INIT Innovations in Transportation, Inc. of Virginia a $31 million contract to design, build, operate and maintain a new smart card pass system for use on TheBus and the Honolulu rail transit system.

“The smart card pass system not only lays the groundwork for Honolulu’s multi- modal transportation system, it also helps us better meet the needs of the transiting public.” said city DTS Director Mike Formby.

“With the award of the fare systems contract, we’re now on our way to providing our customers with the smart card technology they’ll use to ride the rail transit system,” said HART Executive Director and CEO Dan Grabauskas.

INIT will provide new smart card readers on TheBus and ticket vending machines and fare gates at the rail stations.

The contract also calls for customer service terminals at Satellite City Halls and retail outlets to sell passes and load value onto the cards.

The contract is for design plus ten years of operation.
